2 July 2021 — The Church of Sts. Kvirike and Ivlita
The signpost suggests an easy hike of 1.1km, but here in Upper Svaneti one can always assume a significant change it altitude. The climb was well worth the effort, however, culminating in a remarkable 10th-century church stuffed with precious icons. So precious, in fact, that there is a guard stationed at the top with a key, but he alone cannot open the church to visitors. So a representative of the church accompanied us on our hike (with the second key) to let us in. After the visit, he carefully re-sealed the door with a tamper-proof wax seal, which is to endure until the next visit.
